In the largest survey ever conducted to date, the MRC Perinatal Mortality Research Unit has recently shown that the survival rates are increased from 48% to 80% in viable fetuses (>28 weeks) with placental incompetence, by active intervention after detection by DWA. This implies that of the 10 000 cases an additional 3 200 would be saved by detection and active intervention.

The Unit has established extremely simple and appropriate guidelines and algorithms for the interpretation of Doppler waveform analyses. This implies that the analysis could become a routine screening tool. However the cost of employing this technology routinely in antenatal clinics is prohibitive. Ultrasonic technology resulting from military work with unique algorithms and methodology offer an opportunity to develop a unique and patentable low cost DWA for specific application by registered nurses in ante-natal clinics. In addition, this development will stimulate the local medical device industry with concomitant job and wealth creation.
