The multiple parts marking
project, together with the program of the Department
of Transport to physically verify the identification of all
vehicles as part of its Road Traffic Management Strategy, is a
part of the NCPS strategy. The marking of a vehicle, is an
essential ingredient for the solution of vehicle crime in the
South African context. According to the specifications for parts
marking provided by SAPS,
the marks on the vehicles should be permanent and human readable
without the need for instruments. Of all the technologies
investigated, laser marking has proved to best meet these
specifications, being permanent and moreover aesthetically
pleasing. This project will develop marking processes and hardware
to facilitate the marking process and optimize the throughput of
vehicles through parts marking centre. Other issues, which are to
be investigated, are measures to maximize the integrity of the
marking process.
The multiple parts marking
measure is expected to have high impact on vehicle crime in a
variety of focus areas. The measure will entrench the
identification of the vehicle, making it more difficult to change
the vehicle identification numbers and marks for fraudulent
re-registration purposes. It will also impact the sale of stolen
second hand parts via chop shops and provide an audit trail of
evidence for prosecuting cases of vehicle crime. |
