The Innovation Fund

Frequently asked questions

Q: Who qualifies for assistance from the Innovation Fund?

A: The Innovation Fund is open to all in the Research, Science, Engineering and Technology walks of life, whether you are an individual, or as part of an NGO, a Science Council, a Private Company,  a SMME, or a tertiary institution.

Q: Can an inventor qualify for funding from the Innovation Fund?

A: Yes, he can qualify, but it would be more advantageous for his application to be part of a consortium within which a variety of in-house research and development capacity, and financial cash reserves, are vested.

Q: I want to set up a facility or centre that specialises in skills training for the people of South Africa. Would such a facility get any assistance?

A: The establishment of a centre or facility, as such, does not usually fall within the ambit of the Innovation Fund and other Funds should be approached.

Q: How long does it take to complete the evaluation of a proposal?

A: It normally takes six months to finalise a short list of applications that can be supported under a particular round of the Innovation Fund.

Q: How often is a call for proposals made?

A: A call for proposals is made typically once a year and it is announced in the Friday and Sunday newspapers. The closing date is typically 2 months after the announcement of a new round.
